Threatfire antivirus?

My daughter has been having probelm with her computer crashing, and said she had tried a new antivirus program called Threatfire.

I downloaded it and tried it out -- installed it on my laptop -- and it slowed my computer down to a crawl, or actually brought it to a halt. The only way to get it moving again was actually to switch it off. It looks as though this program is not so much antivirus, but rather itself a virus. Has anyone used it successfully? Is there a trick to installing it, to get it to work?

I think I'm going to do a "system restore".

If you need a good, free antivirus tool try avg - http://free.avg.com/
It finds virusses, intrusive software and bad cookies that Norton or Kaspersky doesn't. And it's free and very simple to use. I use it in conjunction with regular anti-virus software at home.

I had never heard of Threatfire, but I did a little research and it is recommended by many prominent computer magazines and sites. I don't think you have to worry about it being malware.

From what I could glean from their website, Threatfire constantly analyzes every file you access and every keystroke you make. My guess is that it's using such a big chunk of your processing power that there's not enough left for anything else. I think you'd have to have a brand-new top-of-the-line computer to use this program- anything less is likely to get bogged down.

I use McAfee myself, but I've heard good things about Clam Win. It's a freebie.

I've been using AVG, and recommended it to my daughter.

I installed Threatfire to try to see what had happened to her computer, and now wish I hadn't. I've spent four hours trying to get my laptop running again, and am now restoring the entire hard drive from a backup made two days ago. After running Threatfire it would not complete a boot, so I couldn't reach the Ststem Restore thingy.

I haven't lost too much - just some work I had done on a student's thesis.

But I'll certainly recommend that nobody should allow Threatfire anywhere near their computer.

Hi, I chanced upon this blog while looking around for information on AVG + Threatfire.

Allow me to vouch for how good these 2 programs are, individually.

Okay, but together, they are a mess. My scenario: after installing both on one of my system, it seems that the system crawls/crashes or doesn't response. Closing down one of them seems to solve this.

Btw, Threatfire (while working alone) seems to find rootkits and solve threats which AVG (while working alone) couldn't find.

I say, throw away the threatfire misconception, and allow it to run on its own. You'll reap the advantages. Cheers.

I have been using Threatfire alone for about 4 months with great success. (I.e. got rid of my firewall and other active antivirus software). About once a week, I do scan separately with a different scanner to make sure nothing has slipped through. Nothing ever has. I really like how Threatfire takes up almost no system resources, and imposes almost no burden on my system. Totally awesome program!

I installed ThreatFire today, on a recent install (2 weeks
ago), because of several Trojans. This was the final prog (I
wanted to 'try-it-out'). All was running great; also, I had
performed multiple virus-scans with 4 diff malware chk progs,
(NO probs) then,
"disk read error; press control-alt-delete to restart",
&--NOTHING!!! Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!
I greatly suspect it crashed my M.B.R.!!! I'm fuming!!!
Please assist - (anyone?)
